The Return of Hopoki!
|Thursday, November 22, 2018|
Team Hopoki are another team from hockey-crazy Finland, and a great group of guys that has been with us for CARHA Hockey World Cups of the past.
We had the opportunity to interview Kalle Backman about the team and their history!
Tell us about your team – what’s your team name, where are you from, and when were you created?
Team is called Hopoki; Hopoki is from Hollola (nearby City of Lahti). The team played their first game in 1998!
Have you been to the CARHA Hockey World Cup in the past?
Our first appearance in the CARHA Hockey World Cup was in 2012 at Sault Ste. Marie, and we also played at the tournament in 2016 in Windsor.
Tell us about the crazy growth of hockey in Finland lately!
Hockey is the number one sport in Finland and the growth is quite steady. It's great to see!
What are you most excited for in the city of Richmond in 2020?
It is great to visit Richmond and British Columbia. It is great to visit great outdoor places and we are looking for that great hospitality we have seen in other parts of Canada.
Do you have a favourite hockey story or memory with your team?
Hopoki is a great bunch of players and all the trips together are excellent. One of the memories is when we traveled 25 hours from Helsinki to Sault Ste. Marie in 2012. The team was quite tired, but we had our first game on Monday at 9:00am and we arrived at the hotel at 12:00am on Sunday. That was all before we realized that five player's equipment was missing and left behind in Toronto. But we won anyway!
