The Great Country of Kazakhstan!

Over the next few months, we're going to be posting country features on all of our attending countries for the 2020 CARHA Hockey World Cup in Richmond, British Columbia.

Up next - Kazakhstan!

Hockey is gaining popularity in Kazakhstan.

Qualifying for the Olympics twice in 1998 and 2006, hockey is on the rise in this nation. Kazakhstan joined the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) in 1992, playing in their first World Championship in 1993.

Since then, they have moved up the rankings to 16th in the world and 6th in Europe. Kazakhstan has produced 10 National Hockey League (NHL) players, known most famously for Nikolai Antropov. They have a professional team who are veterans of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), which is the next best thing to the NHL. This is only the beginning for hockey in Kazakhstan as we can expect big things from this country in the future.

  • Kazakhstan qualified for the Olympics in 1998 and 2006 after only being a part of the IIHF for six years
  • Ice hockey is a growing sport in Kazakhstan
  • There have been 10 Kazakhstan born players in the NHL, including Nikolai Antropov
