Latvia's Long History with Hockey!

Latvia has a long history with hockey dating all the way back to the 1920's. Latvia was a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) however, that halted when they became occupied by the Soviet Union in 1940. When they declared independence in 1991, Latvia was quick to re-join the IIHF, and it wasn’t long before they were back in the A-pool at World Championships causing upsets against countries such as the United States and Russia.

Ice hockey is the most popular sport in Latvia with over 7,000 people registered out of a population just shy of two million. Latvia has a professional league called the Latvian Higher Hockey League which has been around since 1931. They have even sent 15 players to the National Hockey League (NHL).
