Kjell Johansson and Pitea VIP

Kjell Johansson of Sweden has been to EVERY CARHA Hockey World Cup since 1996, and he'll for sure be returning in 2020! We had the opportunity to ask him some questions about the tournament, his team, and his life in hockey!
What is it about the CARHA Hockey World Cup that keeps you coming back for every edition of the event since the beginning in 1996?
It's been really nice to come to every tournament, staying in nice hotels with the team and making a lot of memories. I have been in every tournament since 1996 and I have met a lot of amazing people from other countries!
The CARHA Hockey World Cup hasn’t been hosted in British Columbia since Vancouver in 2000; what are you most excited about in Richmond?
I don't know much about Richmond other than that it is a LONG trip from Sweden but we're very excited.
Being from Sweden, who is your favourite hockey team and some of your favourite players?
My favorite team in Sweden is Frölunda from Gothenborg. It has been this way since I was a little boy and Henrik Lundqvist was playing for the team!
Tell us about your hockey career!
I played as a goalkeeper from the age of 12 until I was 32, but then I decided to come out of the net and play with some veteran guys. I played with a team from Stockholm called the Golden Camels, we went to the CARHA Hockey World Cup and won our group, and eventually went to the finals and beat a team from Canada 6-0!
The Golden Camels returned to the CARHA Hockey World Cup in Vancouver in 2000.
After that, I made the trip to Ottawa in 2004 with our local team in Sweden, Pitea VIP. We had a lovely banquet and our team took the stage to sing songs from the north of Sweden. I continued to play for this team for many years, including the World Cup in 2008 and 2012, before eventually becoming the general manager, which I was when we travelled to the latest CARHA Hockey World Cup. We had a wonderful time!
